S30 - Dire straits

Written by Jonas Pro Cycling at 15:01 13/12-2014

A nightmare of a season has finally come to an end and we are relieved that it is over at last. As it became clearer and clearer that the season goals was far out of sight, the last two parts of the season has been only about survival. We don't find any joy in fighting for secondary positions, as the maingoal of the team has always been to be first ranked. Finishing sixth after finishing second, second and third, just doesn't make the cut.

As things gets in the way of that goal we can only do one of two things. Quit the game acknowledging that we just aren't good enough. Or bite the teeths together and try harder. Redefining the ultimate goal is not an option at Jonas Pro Cycling.

As a responsible management we have analyzed the season in a way so we learn from it. A season like this must not happen again, as we cannot afford to loose more momentum in the race for first spot. Loosing races, equals loosing money which in the end is key to having the best ranked team.

  So what went wrong?

First and foremost a big cadeau must be given to our competators, thus they have the biggest share in our poor performance. The competetition has been strong as ever in our two main disciplines sprint and hillsprints, and we can do nothing than respect the work that is being done at our rivals.

Second we have to look inward and realize that a lot of bad manager decisions have been taken throughout the season. The choice of captains in some races has been a gamble that did not pay off. The pace in which we have been trying to youthify our team. Our sudden interest in Danish riders urging us to pay overprices instead of waiting for the right rider for the right price. Dropping the TT squad counting only on sprint, hills and cobbles when not having the right support riders to swap the points.

Third but not least we have had over share of bad luck. A cascade of injuries has rolled down the team. Nine times a rider has fallen not to finish the race. Three times it has involved a captain having a possible direct influence on our final point count. Nine injuries throughout a season causes teamspirit loss in too many races to fulfill the full potential of a team.

Fourth is what we can call an extraordinary incident, and here we must mention the Silvano Fayad incident. As a topspot contender you have to play the game right to the edge. There is no moral in top competition. There is only to play by the rules. We believe we played by the rules buying Silvano Fayad, but agree it can morally be looked down to an extremely small degree. We believe we got punished for a moral issue but never for breaking the rules. Those rules that are now, were changed far after Fayad was bought. Moral is run by emotions and rules are run by common sence. In the Fayad case Jonas Pro Cycling stands out for being punished for something hundreds of other teams has walked away from. This makes uneven competition and it is the cause to great frustrations. A team must never be intentionally punnished by sone rules that weren't around when a incident occur. Rules has to be clear so they can't be misunderstood or used in another light than how they can be percieved. This has been the case here. Much joy has been lost from that incident. To make it back we have to forget and show that we are strong enough to evercome. We have to look forward and gain the lost momentum back.

Alltogehter we are 1500 points behind seasongoal. We can give harder competition the blame for at least 450 points, bad managementdecisions 300 points, injuries 300 points and the Fayad case another 450 points. So what we can control is 300 points worth of better management and not getting another Fayad case worth another 450 points. That leaves room for a 750 points improvement and another 300 points, if we don't get more than 5 injuries and none of them are keyrider injuries. Therefore teammanagement and sponsors expects a 1000 pointsgain next season. If that is not possible within a 'normal' season luckwise, teamsponsers will reconsider their engagement in the team. Going backwards is not an option at Jonas Pro and only possible if it is to bounce back stronger. 'We don't sponsor loosers' -as stated by sponsors.

All this said, we do not intend to show disrespect to our oponents. We do not intend diminish their good work and if we do fail in the ranking because our oponents are better than us, we can only respect that and work harder.

The scoring riders is for a very unusual season is:

   Sigurd Guldhammer (10 captained)
   9 prizes | 5 results | 2 wins | 790 points | 93.000$

   Adolphe Marchal (11 captained)
   7 prizes | 2 results | 1 wins | 670 points | 68.000$

Lewis Kane (5 captained 1 TT)
   4 prizes | 2 results | 1 wins | 410 points | 44.000$

   Evan Tomkins (4 captained)
   2 prizes | 2 results | 1 wins | 240 points | 25.000$

   Luuk Roewen (8 TT)
   3 prizes | 1 results | 0 wins | 220 points | 24.000$

   Julius Maaskan (6 captained )
   3 prizes | 1 results | 0 wins | 240 points | 23.000$

   Hans-Erik Qvist (7 captained)
   4 prizes | 1 results | 0 wins | 190 points | 21.000$

   Clement Terkelsen (2 captained )
   2 prizes | 1 results | 0 wins | 140 points | 16.000$

   Ingar Vatne (7 captained )
   4 prizes | 0 results | 0 wins | 150 points | 15.000$

   Silvano Fayad (2 captained )
   2 prizes | 0 results | 0 wins | 140 points | 11.000$

   Pascual Hoero (5 TT)
   1 prizes | 0 results | 0 wins | 100 points | 10.000$

   Uffe Davidsen (4 captained )
   1 prizes | 0 results | 0 wins | 100 points | 8.000$

   Leon Lübcke (8 TT)
   1 prizes | 0 results | 0 wins | 90 points | 8.000$

   Oswald Morgan (1 captained )
   1 prizes | 0 results | 0 wins | 40 points | 6.000$

Having the mix of riders we now have, it is getting diffucult to do the seasonal count for each racetype. Adolphe Marchal, Uffe Davidsen and Ingar Vatne are all riding both hill and sprint races. Dividing their points in the different genres will not make as much sence now, as sometimes the hill team will ride in a sprint race and a hillcaptain will be supported by a classic leadout train.

Therefore we will go back to the personal rider expactations as we believe much less riders will score in season 31.

Have the season goals been met?

   Team goals:
   Top1 / 5000 points / 520k
= Far far from. Only gaining 3510 points and earning 372k. Had this been topfootball I, the manager, would have been sacked already.

Timetrialers - Roewens, Hoero, Dadakos and new signing:
   750 pts / 75k
= Not reached and no new signing

Hillers - Tomkins, Kane and new signing:
   1500 pts / 125k
= No, though Kane is still tearing it apart with an outstanding performance

   Cobblers - Guldhammer:
   500 pts / 50k
= Yes, the lightpoint of the season Sigurd Guldhammer, have just delivered his best season by far, at the age of 34, which is why he hasn't been replaced yet. There is 93.000 reasons and 790 points between him and his retirement.

   The Squad and the future

The mainprofile on the team is national rider Hans-Erik Qvist, who have had a disaster start in the team. Much like teamlegend Brian Hitchens he has hugely underperformed in his first season. We believe we can put togehter the right raceschedule with the right support for him in season 31, so he will be at least top 20 ranked rider. Qvist will race the classic sprintraces and participate in all the tour sprint races. We reckon he is not the right kind of rider for the SC, in particulat with the new superstars emerging. As Qvist can't cover the whole classic sprintingcalendar agening Eddi Autzen has been brought to the team. He is a nicherider, who will ride four races in the season, special picked from Qvists raceschedule and Autzens qualities.

The second profile at the team will be Ingar Vatne. The young and hugely talented hill rider. He will cover all the classic hill calendar and also participate in Essex tour where he will be TT-centered for. We do not believe he can make podium without TF, but are eager to see if he can make it top9. Vatne will also be riding the hill races in Germany Tour as captain.

Third profile is Adolphe Marchal. With his very unusual type of skillset he will both cover some of the more hill oriented races with a lot of sidestats where Vatne comes short in technique or his raceschedule is too tight. And also some more classic sprint races, that falls outside Qvist/Autzen schedule. Marchal will ride a few high average and flatroad races. In cases where Vatne and Marchal are occupied elsewhere, veteran rider Lewis Kane will standin. He is performing as if he was 28 still, and We expect to put him to use in three races in season 31.

Fourth profile is agening Sigurd Guldhammer who at age 34 still dominates the cobble calendar. We don't expect him to do as well this season and we are therefore starting to look for his replacement. But as long as Guldhammer performs he will stay and he will get more chances than the usual 34 year old rider.

Uffe Davidsen the fast hiller will cover the classic hillraces that Vatne can't race and of course the niche hillsprint races. He will be an important rider for the hillcampain as it offers a lot of interesting possibilities having two so talented riders as Vatne and Davidsen plus the multi purposable Marchal to select from.

Luuk Roewen remains the last fullblood TT'er in the team. His role will be mainly in the tours where he will try to get some points on the side in the prologues. Besides that he will be luxury leadout 1.

   Ingar Vatne:
   11 races / 850 pts / 90k / top 9 in Essex
